Every home lift brochure in India says the product is certified. Almost none says by whom, against what, or for which model — and a buyer reading three brochures side by side has no way to tell whether they’re looking at equivalent claims or wildly different ones.

That matters more here than in most purchases. This is equipment that carries your parents and children between floors several times a day for twenty years. And unlike a car or an appliance, there’s no familiar rating you can look up. So the safety question — the one everyone actually cares about — gets settled by whichever salesperson sounds most confident.

It doesn’t have to be. Home elevator safety certifications are verifiable documents, not marketing claims, and checking them takes about ten minutes. This guide explains which certifications matter, what each one actually covers, and how to verify what you’re told.

The Certifications That Matter — and What Each Covers

The single most useful thing to understand is that different certifications cover completely different things. Suppliers sometimes present them interchangeably; they aren’t.

Product safety certification. This is the one that matters most, and it’s about the lift itself — its structure, mechanisms, safety systems and behaviour under fault conditions. It’s issued by an independent certification body after testing and assessment against a named standard. Ask which body, which standard, and which model.

Standards compliance. The benchmark the product was designed and tested against. In Europe, residential lifting appliances fall under the Machinery Directive, with product standards in the EN 81 family — EN 81-41 covers lifting platforms for persons with impaired mobility. Ask which specific standard your supplier’s product is assessed against, and get the number.

Quality management certification — ISO 9001. This certifies the manufacturer’s quality processes, not the product’s safety. Useful, but it is not a safety certificate and shouldn’t be presented as one.

Environmental management — ISO 14001. Certifies environmental management systems at the manufacturing level. Again, not a safety claim.

Occupational health and safety — ISO 45001. Certifies workplace health and safety management for the manufacturer’s own operations. Not a product safety claim either.

The distinction is worth holding onto: ISO certifications tell you about the company. Product certification tells you about the lift. A supplier who offers only the former, when asked about the latter, has answered a different question.

Who the Certification Bodies Are

You’ll encounter a handful of names, and it’s worth knowing they’re not interchangeable.

TÜV NORD and TÜV SÜD are both German technical inspection organisations, and both are reputable — but they are separate companies. If one document says one and another says the other, that’s a discrepancy to resolve, not a detail to overlook.

TÜV Rheinland, SGS, Bureau Veritas and Intertek are other independent bodies you may see.

What matters is that the body is independent of the manufacturer and that the certificate names your product. A self-declared conformity statement is not third-party certification, and the two can look similar to an untrained eye.

What Applies in India

There is no single national statute governing residential lift certification in India, which is why the European standards framework is the common reference point for this product category.

Separately from product certification, installation is regulated at state level. Several states — Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra among them — operate their own Lifts and Escalators legislation, under which permission from or registration with the state Electrical Inspectorate may apply, sometimes with periodic inspection. Whether your installation is caught depends on your state, the building type and, in some cases, whether the lift serves a single private dwelling.

Two practical points follow. Product certification and installation permission are different things — having one does not deliver the other. And you should establish in writing, before payment, who obtains any required permission: the supplier or you.

How to Verify a Certification Claim in Ten Minutes

Six steps, all reasonable, all quick.

  1. Ask for the certificate, not the logo. A brochure mark is not a document.
  2. Check it names your exact model and variant. A certificate covering one model in a range does not automatically cover the one you’re buying. This is the most common gap.
  3. Check the issuing body and the standard number. Both should be stated on the certificate.
  4. Check the validity dates. Certificates expire and are renewed.
  5. Verify with the issuing body. Most certification bodies operate an online certificate database or a verification enquiry service. This is the step almost nobody takes, and it’s the one that actually confirms the claim.
  6. Ask what it covers. Structure? Safety systems? The complete installed lift? “Certified” without scope is not information.

If a supplier hesitates at any of these, that hesitation is your answer.

The specific standard number and the exact model scope of the certificate are the two details that turn a certification claim into verifiable information — and they’re the two most often left off marketing material, by every manufacturer in this category. What to Ask Before You Sign

Six questions, and how a supplier handles them is itself informative.

  1. May I see the certificate for my exact model and variant, from the named certifying body?
  2. Which standard was it assessed against — the number, not the family?
  3. What does the certification cover — structure, safety systems, or the complete installed lift?
  4. Is any Electrical Inspectorate permission required in my state, and who obtains it?
  5. Will each safety feature be demonstrated individually at commissioning, and will I receive a written commissioning certificate confirming testing at every landing?
  6. What documentation pack do I receive at handover?

That fifth question matters more than it sounds. Commissioning is the only point at which you personally see the safety systems working in your own home, and the certificate confirming it is a document worth keeping for the life of the installation.
